The Zero Article & Names

Intermediate · Nouns & Articles

Sometimes the correct choice is to use no article at all — this is called the "zero article". It is common with general ideas and with most place names.

Place names have their own patterns that are worth learning as a set, because they are not always logical.

Rules & examples

  1. No article with most countries, cities, streets, languages, and meals.

These are treated as specific enough on their own.

    • I live in France.
    • She speaks Japanese.
    • We had lunch.
  2. Use "the" with plural country names, rivers, seas, deserts, and mountain ranges.

Especially names that describe a group or a "united" area.

    • the Netherlands
    • the USA
    • the Nile
    • the Alps
  3. No article in "go to bed / go home / go to work / go to school" (general purpose).

Here we mean the activity, not a specific building.

    • She went to bed.
    • I go to work by bus.
  4. No article before general abstract or plural nouns.

When speaking about the idea in general.

    • Love is powerful.
    • Cats are independent.

Tips to remember

  • Single countries usually have no article (France, Japan) — but "united/grouped" names take "the" (the UK, the USA, the Philippines).

Common mistakes

  • ✗ I am going to the home. → ✓ I am going home. — "Home" takes no article and no preposition in this phrase.
  • ✗ She lives in the France. → ✓ She lives in France. — Most single countries take no article.
